The most common mistakes people make when choosing a mattress?

  • Don’t test the mattresses at the end of a day’s shopping – everything will feel comfortable!
  • When testing the mattress try rolling over. If it is difficult to turn it may be too soft, if uncomfortable on the hips or shoulders it may be too firm.

Things to consider when buying a mattress

Your sleep position is also important when choosing your mattress.

  • Firm mattress tops are best suited if you sleep mostly on your back or stomach, giving you the proper comfort and support
  • Plush layers work best for helping sooth pressure points throughout your body as you sleep
  • Euro-top mattress layers are constructed of material soft enough to let your body sink in and are particularly suited to side sleepers

Make sure the base you have at home is similar to the base in the display room, as a mattress can feel very different on another base.

There are three main types of beds

  1. Bonnell Spring – Continuous or open-coil mattress – Often more affordable but less comfortable that that of a pocket springs. Or as durable as the foam only. The springs move as one unit so tossing and turning can disturb your partner. These types have been around for hundreds of years and tend to have a lot of bounce in them. However, with technology and the evolution of beds, we’ve been able to improve the comfort of them.

  1. Foam – Multi-Layered Foam Construct – These involve; Memory Foam, Latex Foam, Convoluted Foam, Miracle Foam, Gel foam and general high-density foam layers. Laminated together to create different feels and are designed differently for different purposes or needs. These types are generally the healthier of the 3, Or rather, they’re better designed specifically for individuals suffering with back injuries or conditions. Of the three types, you also find that the Foams can be custom made to any size, any type or any feel. They can also be manufactured very hard.

  1. Pocket-spring mattress – a pocket-spring mattress has up to 1200 springs sewn into individual fabric pockets. They can be customized to have two sides, of different firmness. They offer good support by distributing your body weight evenly, and will support two people of two different body weights well because the springs are separate. The open-spring construction allows air to circulate. The springs can be customized to different tensions – soft, medium or firm. They can be heavy to turn and natural materials such as lambs wool can exacerbate allergies. These also eliminate movement transfer (If your partner moves, you won’t be disturbed by it). They also offer a lot more in terms of comfort and luxury. But not always ideal for the individual, depending on their needs.
